Go On, Play with Your Food By Jim Bushee Well at least that is what George Lerner thought when he invented Mr. Potato Head. George Lerner was a toy inventor from Brooklyn. George came up with the idea to make plastic facial features with push pins that could make a face when added to a fruit or vegetable. Growing up George would make dolls for his sister by of attaching small fruits and vegetables to bigger ones. She got a kick out of all of the funny faces he would make for her. Luckily his mother had a large vegetable garden. George had a hard time getting manufacturers to make and distribute his idea. It was just after the war and people didn't like the idea of wasting food. He came up with the idea in 1949 to make the plastic parts. ln 1951 a cereal company was willing to distribute it as a toy in their cereal boxes. But, then Lerner got a response from a small textile company that eventually became Hasbro. They wanted to sell his toy and were willing to buy it back from the cereal company and then give George 5% of every one they sold. It became a huge hit very quickly. Eventually the set included the famous plastic potato so kids wouldn't need to supply their own.

I'll bet a lot of people thought that was a half-baked idea at first. I'm glad it became a hot potato. I remember having this when I was growing up.
